Ronnie Lottz, the happy proprietor of one of our favorite barbecue places – Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge in Berwyn, IL – likes to have fun most of the year. At Halloween, however, he pulls out all the stops. Once again this year, Ronnie is hosting Halloween Week. If you plan to trick or treat on Route 66 in Chicagoland, make sure you stop by his beer, ’cue and cigar emporium at some point next week. With a week-long spooktacular that will last through dinnertime on All Saints Day (for those late risers with truly monstrous hangovers from the night before), there’ll be plenty of opportunity to check out the events if you visit or live in the area. Address and phone are listed at the bottom of this post.
The boo-dacious bash starts at noon on Sunday, October 26, 2014 and runs through 6pm Sunday, October 26, 2014. On Sunday the 26th, Ronnie kicks off the week with the Chicago Bears football game on the big screen and Bloody Mary specials all day long, followed by whatever specials he has on the smoker and the latest episode of The Walking Dead at 8pm. Nothing like spooky group appointment TV to get the blood going!
Not sure how to do your face for the big day? No problem: at 7 pm on Monday, October 27, there will be a creepy make-up demo, live on stage and projected on the big screen, as professional make-up artist Antanisha Stokes TRANSFORMS HUMANS INTO HORRORS!!! (those are Ronnie’s caps, not ours, but what the heck …) Also that night will be a Haunted Bus Tour hosted by Sir Mike McArthur; sign up for the tour at the bar. You can find out more about it on the lounge’s website.
Tuesday, October 28 will be tent night with 9 pm showing of the original, uncut version of that horror classic, The Exorcist. Specials on the menu that night will feature – what else, given the projectile spewing? – smoked split-pea soup! There will also be live actors performing along with the film, spinning haunted sounds, and DJ Joe Black’s Midnight Spook Show afterwards. The big circus tent in the parking lot will be heated nice and cozy for your viewing and dining pleasure, and there will be more Haunted Bus Tours that night as well for those who’d rather ride than watch.
Wednesdays are usually Open Mic night for comedy, and October 29 will be only slightly different: that night, Happy The Drunken Clown will lead Chicago’s top comics. They’ll be on stage and dressed to thrill, and the Haunted Bus Tours will make more rounds.
Freaktoberfest 5, another cozy-warm circus tent event, is what’s in store for Thursday, October 30. That’s an annual mini-beerfest and tasting event hosted by Louis Glunz Beers and featuring 18 different craft beers this year. Entertainment for the evening will be provided by daredevil comic Mark The Knife – the world’s most dangerous comic, as seen on “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” – and may well involve CHAINSAWS AND LAWNMOWERS, we’re told, so be careful out there as you watch from a safe distance. Live music will be provided by The Amazing Heeby Jeebies, who will perform the hits of The Cramps, and DJ Joe Black will host a Midnight Spook Show. Please note: This event has a separate $30 ticket (to cover the cost of the beer samples, of course), which you should be able to buy at the bar.
On Halloween, Friday the 31st, the big night’s events from 8 pm until closing will feature freak shows to the music of Chicago’s original hairbangers, Diamond Rexx. Happy The Human Pincushion, Grinder Grrrl Queerella Fistalot, and Iron Balls McArthur will all makes appearances, and DJ Joe Black will host another Midnight Spook Show. Come in costume to compete in the contest at midnight. Please note: This is another heated circus tent event and has a ticket price of $15.
For those who can make it up that morning by 10 am, Saturday, November 1 will be the free Family Fun Day, sponsored by Urban Mutt. Parents, children and their dogs will rock out under the big tent to music by kid bands including The Choice. Expect giant monsters chasing children, horror movies and Bloody Marys for the beleaguered grownups. Bringing your dog is optional but highly encouraged. The event will end at 6 pm so that an exhausted Ronnie can make it an early night and get some sleep. Finally.
Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge is at 6715 W. Ogden Ave. – right on Historic Route 66 – in Berwyn. Call 708-484-1043 for further information. And always remember to tip your bartender and barmaid.
